Anurag Kashyap On Bollywood Films Struggling At Box Office: ‘Hindi Films Are Not Rooted, People Who Can't Speak Hindi Are Making Hindi Films’

Anurag Kashyap is bracing for his upcoming directorial venture ‘Dobaaraa’. Recently, during the trailer launch, he spoke about the reason Bollywood films struggle at the box office as they are not ‘rooted’. He even spoke about why Gangubai Kathiawadi and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 were the only two films that were major hits in just a year.
When he was asked about Hindi films not working at the box office he was quoted saying, “Because our Hindi films are not rooted, this is the simple answer. When you see Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam films, they're rooted in their culture, whether that's mainstream or non-mainstream culture. But our films are not rooted.” He added, “Here, people who can't speak Hindi, who speak English, are making Hindi films. Wherever the films are rooted, they work. When our mainstream filmmakers make their kind of films, they work.”
Speaking about the film Gangubai Kathiawadi and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 said that these were the only two films that were blockbuster hits in a year. Both the films were directed by ace filmmakers Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Anees Bazmee, respectively did amazingly well at the box office because the director followed their convictions.
Interestingly, according to the experts from the film industry as per the current trend end of mid-size films have a golden theatrical run. Reacting to this Anurag Kashyap said, “Throughout my career, times have always been scary. For me, the risk factor is the same here as it has been for every other film. It's a tough time for people who have established and understood the market and make very big films. For me, it's the same”
Speaking about the film, "Dobaaraa" is the Hindi remake of the 2018 Spanish movie ‘Mirage’ starring Taapsee Pannu. The mystery drama is set to be released on August 19, 2022, in pan India theoretically. The film is jointly produced by Ektaa Kapoor's Cult Movies, and Sunir Kheterpal and Gaurav Bose's banner Athena.
